It all starts from the fruit bearing tree (cocoa tree) and gathering its  large oval pods wich contain the seeds. Discovered first in the United States this tree is now grown in many countries near the Equator.

Pods are emptied from their seeds which are then dried in the sun. After the drying process the seeds undergo roasting. When the roasting phase is completed the seeds are crushed resultin in cocoa powder. The powder is kept as is or gets squeezed resulting in cocoa butter.

Mixing the powder with butter, milk powder and sugar ends up as chocolate. Proportions of each component in the mixture will determine whether the end result will be dark, milk or white chocolate. Dark chocolate can be made with up to ninety percent of cocoa in the mixture giving a bitter tasting chocolate; milk chocolate has usually seventy percent of cocoa along with more milk powder. White chocolate on the other hand is made of cocoa butter only mixed with milk powder and sugar.

A Hot Chocolate Themed Kitchen

Marci McFarland asked:

Chocolate is a wonderfully versatile theme that can transform your kitchen into a cozy nook reminiscent of the comfort of hot chocolate.

The milk and dark browns of true chocolate and the creamy white of white chocolate are great colors to decorate your kitchen in. Find color accents from the foods and spices that go with chocolate: vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, chilis. The original cocoa bean comes in colors that range from yellow to red. You’re trying to evoke the richness of hot chocolate with all the trimmings: whipped cream, sprinklings of cinnamon and nutmeg and even some hot chili accents.

The advantage of chocolate themes is that you can go dark or light. If your kitchen is smaller, you might want to try a creamy white like white chocolate, vanilla or whipped cream for the walls. You can even spritz some cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkles on the walls to give them that whipped-cream-on-hot-chocolate look. Patterned wallpaper that combines chocolate colors might also be a good option. A chocolate-brown-and-white stripe might work. If the kitchen is large and well-lighted, a chocolate brown color on the walls may not be too much. Use your knowledge of your space to make the right decision.

Once you’ve figured out the walls, consider the accents. Creamy white chocolate walls will get a boost from milk or dark chocolate browns on the door frames, doors, windowsills and floors. Chocolate browns also work well for your counters, dish towels, plates and kitchen tools. A chocolate brown tablecloth is attractive against white plateware and also hides many stains. If you want to ‘pep up’ your theme, consider chili red chairs or tablecloth or counters. Cinnamon and nutmeg browns do well to lighten up a rich, dark chocolatey main theme.

Collect old chocolate tins to keep kitchenware and frequently used baking supplies in. Hang some pictures featuring chocolate or put some vintage chocolate posters on your walls – turn-of-the-century Nouveau Art posters are exceptionally attractive. Try your hand at shadowbox frames (a shallow box with one glass side, meant to be hung on the wall) and fill them with cocoa beans. Hang mugs for hot chocolate on the walls and don’t forget to have your favorite chocolate mix situated prominently somewhere, along with the paraphernalia that go along with the perfect cup of chocolate.

Plants are an important part of decorating and a chocolate themed room is no exception. There are a number of plants that will either add to the smell or the appearance of your room. Chocolate flowers (berlandiera lyrata), chocolate cosmos (cosmos atrosanguineus) and chocolate vines (akebia quinata) actually smell like chocolate. The original chocolate plant, the cocoa tree (theobroma cacao), is notoriously difficult to grow in climates it is not suited for, but you can certainly give it a try. Check out chocolateflowerfarm.com for a wonderful selection of “chocolate” themed plants and seeds.

With a careful choice of wall colors and accents, you can recreate the look and feel of a decadent drink – calorie free.

Chocolate Marketing – Harness the Power of Chocolate for your Marketing

Posted by - Categoriezed under: Marketing
Ginger Marks asked:

Chocolate is unquestionably the number one comfort food. Worldwide, no other word excites our hearts and minds, yes, even our palates to action. It can be obtained in many forms. There is hot chocolate, cold chocolate, and spicy chocolate. If your passion is rich, dark, bittersweet, or milky sweet it can be easily satisfied. There is even white chocolate for those who fancy a light, creamy taste without the flavor that the alternatives deliver. What is it about chocolate that so permeates our subconscious until we ultimately indulge our craving?

If you look at all the characteristics that this confection is noted for you will undeniably find the list lacking nothing. The very first few that come to my mind are:

Sweet or bittersweet taste

Rich, creamy indulgence

Warm, inviting, comfort food

Nothing quite smells like chocolate

And that is just for starters. However, its features are not what we crave. We crave it for what it does for us. As I ponder this subject, to better focus on the answers to these questions, I can think of no other chocolaty indulgence that I would rather have than My Little Taste of Italy’s sinfully, sensual, rich and luscious cappuccino brownies. They are so well known, on both coasts of America and in between, that they have been dubbed, “Orgasmic!”

Mama Gloria and Liz have discovered the key to satisfy the most discerning palate. Their tasty treats include chocolate biscotti that are to die for fabulous. Did I tell you their treats are known all across America? Well, that isn’t quite accurate. They are also ship their goodies overseas to our armed forces, but this is another tale for another time.

So, what is it that Mama Gloria and Liz have discovered that has enthralled the world? They have figured out that we cannot live without chocolate and have used that knowledge to capture our appetites and our hearts. When we look at what chocolate does for us, and what makes the desire so strong that we cannot ignore it, we discover the essence of true marketing potential. What is it that My Little Taste of Italy’s Cappuccino Brownies do for the lucky soul Let’s uncover their secret.

What chocolate does for the consumer is summed up in how it makes them feel. Some of these benefits are:

Satisfies our senses

Soothes our nerves

Makes us feel good about ourselves

Provides health benefits

It is a well known fact that chocolate increases our endorphins, actively producing a sense of well being, and serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant. Recently I discovered that it is also beneficial to smokers. “It has shown promise in that it may reverse some of their smoking-related impairment in blood vessel function,” according to a study in the Oct. 4, 2005, issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

But what does all of this have to do with marketing? The answer is simple, EVERYTHING! Think of it, if you could harness the benefits of chocolate in your advertising you would ensure your business’ success. If you simply find a way to make your product or service compelling to your consumer you will seldom loose a sale. Sit down right now and create a list of all of your product or service’s features. Then from that you will be able to build the list that will clearly define the benefits to your customers. With that knowledge firmly in hand you will have the key to the best marketing plan that you have ever prepared.
